Project Greenlight – Vancouver Economic Commission

Project Greenlight is a membership-based network of major enterprises in Metro Vancouver dedicated to improving sustainability, operational efficiencies and customer experience. The initiative promotes members' challenges to local and global innovators, who submit forward-thinking solutions. The program was launched to help regional organizations identify and onboard new solutions at a faster pace; advance their clean and smart city goals; and improve the region's competitive position among peer cities. The program launched with five member: FortisBC, TransLink, City of Vancouver, City of New Westminster, and QuadReal Property Group. https://projectgreenlight.io/

In addition to furthering issues-based economic development, Project Greenlight is platforming sustainability, access and equity challenges, and engaging institutions across the region. Since the program launched, we have:

  • Issued 8 challenges for 5 founding members (FortisBC, TransLink, City of Vancouver, City of New Westminster and QuadReal Property Group)
  • Launched three innovation pilots
  • Earned over 270 newsletter subscribers
  • Reached upwards of 600,000 social media impressions
  • Earned nearly 3,000 clicks to the Project Greenlight website through paid LinkedIn campaigns
  • Worked with a production company to produce and market six videos
  • Partnered with organizations such as Low Carbon Business Action Canada (LCBA) and BC Tech to expand innovation network
  • Presented at various conferences and webinars

Collectively, these marketing efforts have helped to generate 363 leads and 102 applications from innovators (locally and internationally) for member challenges, with solutions ranging from leveraging drones, AR/VR and AI to improve energy service provision to British Columbians, to building-related solutions that address low-carbon construction requirements.

Communities around the world can replicate and adapt Project Greenlight to support rapid innovation among their own transit authorities, developers, utilities, and other major enterprises. Throughout the process, we have learned that having a robust communications and marketing plan is essential to spread awareness of the project's importance, as is tapping into partner networks of innovators locally and around the world.
